Jakes began pastoring a small West Virginia congregation in 1982. His Woman, Thou Art Loosed! ministry, conference and book became the breakthrough that expanded his audience beyond the pulpit.
He moved to Dallas in 1996 and founded The Potter’s House. The official church history says the first service drew more than 2,000 people and the congregation later exceeded 28,000 members.

Up to $1 billion describes financing capacity, not a payout
Wells Fargo and the T.D. Jakes Group announced a ten-year partnership in 2023 aimed at inclusive communities. The release says it could result in up to $1 billion in capital and financing plus foundation grants.
The words “up to,” the ten-year period and the mix of loans, investment and grants all matter. Projects may draw funds over time; borrowers owe financing; nonprofit grants remain purpose-bound.
The commitment therefore cannot be added to Jakes’s wealth or used as a valuation for his group. Ownership percentages, project-level debt, fees and distributions would be needed for any personal calculation.
