The essentials
Forbes estimated $1.4 billion in September 2026, but does not publish a complete personal balance sheet. [1]
Blackstone bought a majority of Spanx at a $1.2 billion valuation; Blakely retained a significant, undisclosed stake. [2]
Blakely bootstrapped Spanx with $5,000 and kept 100% ownership until its first outside investment in 2021. [4]
Bootstrap · Spanx deal · Wealth estimate · Sneex · Family and giving
Sara Blakely’s wealth story has unusually strong public milestones: a documented $5,000 bootstrap, 21 years of full ownership, a $1.2 billion control transaction and a current Forbes estimate. The missing deal terms still prevent an exact personal calculation.
This review removes the old article’s false 2012 sale and Carlyle story. Company revenue, transaction valuation, retained equity, family wealth and philanthropy are kept separate. Net Worth VIP — methodology
01 / The bootstrap
The famous $5,000 is documented; the later ownership story matters more
Blakely developed footless control-top pantyhose while selling fax machines and funded Spanx with $5,000 of personal savings. The National Inventors Hall of Fame records that she wrote her own patent draft, found a manufacturer and launched without outside investment.
U.S. Patent No. 6,276,176 covered the undergarment design. After Oprah Winfrey selected Spanx as a Favorite Thing, Blakely left her sales job; the Hall of Fame says she sold 8,000 pairs in her first five minutes on QVC.
Spanx produced $4 million in first-year revenue and $10 million in year two. Those are company sales rather than Blakely’s personal income, but full ownership for the first 21 years meant the business value was initially concentrated with her.
02 / The Blackstone transaction
A $1.2 billion valuation was not a $1.2 billion personal payout
In October 2021, Blackstone agreed to buy a majority stake in Spanx at a $1.2 billion company valuation. Blakely retained what the announcement called a significant equity stake and became executive chairwoman.
The exact percentage sold, cash-versus-rollover mix, company debt, fees and tax were not disclosed. A valuation prices the enterprise or equity under deal terms; it is not the amount deposited into the founder’s bank account.
The transaction nevertheless anchors the wealth story more firmly than a generic celebrity estimate. Blakely owned 100% before the deal, sold control and kept private-company upside, but her current Spanx stake cannot be independently valued from public information.
03 / What the $1.4 billion estimate contains
Forbes combines visible stakes with private assumptions that cannot be fully reproduced
Forbes estimated Blakely’s net worth at $1.4 billion on September 15, 2026 and identifies Spanx as the main source. It also notes a minority stake in the Atlanta Hawks, but does not publish the exact ownership percentage or a complete asset-and-liability worksheet.
The estimate may reflect the retained Spanx interest, proceeds from the 2021 transaction, investments and other assets. Private-company marks, taxes, spending, charitable transfers and household allocation with husband Jesse Itzler all affect the result.
The profile therefore treats $1.4 billion as a strong published estimate, not an audited balance sheet. The old claim that she sold Spanx in 2012, or sold 20% to Carlyle for $250 million, is false and has been removed.
The evidence, with its limits
| Evidence | Public figure | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Forbes estimate | $1.4B | Published personal estimate as of September 15, 2026. |
| Spanx starting capital | $5K | Blakely’s personal bootstrap investment. |
| First-year Spanx revenue | $4M | Company sales, not personal income. |
| Second-year Spanx revenue | $10M | Company sales, not personal income. |
| 2021 Spanx valuation | $1.2B | Deal valuation for a majority investment, not personal payout. |
| Retained Spanx equity | Significant · undisclosed | Current percentage and private-company value are unavailable. |
| Sneex launch price | $395+ | Product retail price, not company revenue or founder wealth. |
04 / The second act
Sneex is a new private venture, not a disclosed billion-dollar asset
Blakely launched Sneex in August 2024 after years of product development. Forbes describes the first hybrid high-heel sneakers as priced from $395; the brand expanded into a hybrid high-heel sandal in 2026.
Sneex demonstrates that Blakely remains an active founder rather than simply a passive Spanx shareholder. Its official site explains the product concept, but publishes no revenue, financing, ownership cap table or valuation.
No Sneex value is added independently to Forbes’ estimate. Retail price proves a product exists; it does not reveal units sold, margins, company equity value or the founder’s personal distributions.
05 / Family, giving and now
Jesse Itzler, four children and a public promise to give
Blakely has been married to entrepreneur Jesse Itzler since 2008. They have four children — Lazer, Charlie, Lincoln and Tepper — and live in Atlanta. His companies and wealth are not automatically counted as hers.
She signed the Giving Pledge in 2013, committing to give a majority of her wealth to charitable causes and emphasizing opportunities for women. A pledge describes intent over a lifetime or through an estate; it is not evidence that a particular amount has already left her balance sheet.
In 2026, Blakely remains Spanx founder and executive chairwoman, leads Sneex and entered the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The mix of retained private equity, a second brand, sports-team ownership and philanthropy explains both the scale and uncertainty of her wealth estimate.
