Net worth & personal profile
Peter NygardNet Worth
The $500M headline tested against C$91M+ in corporate realizations, C$36M in secured debt, bankruptcy records, civil exposure and his current imprisonment.
Peter Nygard's current net worth is not independently established. Celebrity Net Worth lists $500 million, but court records show his companies entered receivership, more than C$91 million of corporate assets were realized, and the proceeds were reserved for consolidated creditor claims. Those corporate figures do not reveal his present personal assets or liabilities.

The essentials
The $500 million figure is an outside estimate, not an auditable 2026 balance sheet. It does not reconcile receivership, bankruptcy, taxes or liabilities. [1]
Court-based summaries show more than C$91 million realized from corporate assets, but roughly C$36 million in secured debt and consolidated creditor claims came first. Corporate proceeds are not personal wealth. [5]
The receiver records that Peter Nygard had no prior claim or entitlement to the debtor companies’ net receivership proceeds. [3]

Peter Nygard built a North American women’s-fashion group and once appeared on Canadian rich lists. The company network was placed in receivership in 2020, its assets were sold, and the estates later entered bankruptcy while Nygard remained imprisoned. That sequence makes old wealth rankings especially poor evidence of what he owns today.
This review removes the old page’s unsupported $900 million claim. It keeps personal wealth separate from company property, gross liquidation receipts, money reserved for creditors, vacated judgments and pending claims. Net Worth VIP — methodology
01 / The headline number
The published $500M estimate cannot be reproduced
Celebrity Net Worth currently lists $500 million and refers to a 2009 Canadian Business estimate of $750 million. The page does not provide current bank accounts, securities, real estate titles, debts, taxes or a calculation adjusted for the collapse of the Nygard companies.
An old rich-list figure generally valued a controlling owner through a private operating business. It did not mean the same amount sat in personal cash, and it cannot survive a receivership unchanged without evidence of what remained after creditors were paid.
No current personal balance sheet or reliable residual ownership value is public, so the structured wealth field stays blank. The $500 million number is shown only as a third-party estimate.
02 / The fashion empire
A large business footprint did not equal liquid personal wealth
Nygard’s commercial breakthrough began in Winnipeg in 1967, when he invested savings and borrowed funds in Jacob’s Fashions. The business expanded through labels including Tan Jay, Alia and Nygard-branded apparel, with stores and wholesale relationships across North America.
The corporate structure was a network of Canadian and U.S. entities rather than one public company with a transparent market value. Control does not show what could be extracted after corporate debt, intercompany balances and creditor priorities.
He stepped down in February 2020. On March 18, 2020, a Manitoba court appointed Richter as receiver after secured lenders alleged defaults under a recently arranged credit facility.
03 / Receivership and asset sales
More than C$91M was realized, but it belonged to creditor estates
A Canadian Bar Association paper summarizing the Manitoba appellate record reports approximately C$28.579 million realized from Nygard Properties and C$62.748 million from the remaining debtor entities. It also describes about C$36 million of secured debt plus substantial unsecured claims.
The same summary says roughly C$9.9 million remained as net liquidation proceeds after certain distributions. That remainder was not a personal payout: the court substantively consolidated the estates so proceeds could address common creditor liabilities.
The receiver’s filed report quotes the court’s conclusion that Peter Nygard had no prior claim or entitlement to the preserved or net receivership proceeds. In 2024, the listed entities were formally assigned or ordered into bankruptcy.
04 / Convictions and civil exposure
The legal ledger is active, but claims are not automatic debts
An Ontario jury convicted Nygard on four counts of sexual assault in 2023. He received an 11-year sentence in September 2024, less presentence credit, and the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed both conviction and sentence appeals in May 2026.
In July 2026 he pleaded guilty in Quebec to sexual assault and forcible confinement. Sentencing returns October 2. He also faces pending U.S. extradition and a nine-count federal case; he has pleaded not guilty to those U.S. charges. Manitoba charges were stayed in October 2025 over missing evidence.
A prior civil award exceeding $200 million to Louis Bacon was vacated in 2024. A December 2025 New York ruling granted Bacon summary judgment on defamation per se, but marked the disposition non-final and did not establish a current payable damages amount.
05 / Family and present status
The public family count varies; no current partner is confirmed
Global News identified Kai as Nygard’s eldest son in a family of nine children in 2020; some later biographical summaries list ten. Without an authoritative current family register, the discrepancy is disclosed.
Public reporting documents past relationships and a cultivated playboy image, but no reliable current source confirms a spouse or partner. Since his December 2020 arrest, Nygard has remained in custody and is now serving the Ontario sentence.
His current public activity is legal rather than commercial: Quebec sentencing remains pending, U.S. extradition is expected after Canadian proceedings, and multiple corporate bankruptcies continue under a trustee. No verified renewed operating business or earned-income stream is public.
