That is the same number laundered through a bigger domain, not corroboration. The $10 million, $20 million and $30 million figures elsewhere are content-farm inventions, and the “$46 million” comes from a site that generates fake celebrity earnings pages.
$100 Million on One Side, $5 Million on the Other
This is the whole story, and it can be told entirely with sourced figures.
Murder Inc. claimed more than 30 million units sold and over $500 million grossed as a label. Ashanti’s 2002 debut alone is RIAA-certified 3× Platinum; Chapter II and Concrete Rose each went Platinum. Her first week — 502,500 copies — was the biggest female debut on record at the time, and the album won a Grammy.
In July 2022, Irv Gotti sold his 50% stake in those masters to Iconoclast for $100 million cash, plus a $200 million line of credit to fund a film business he would own outright. He described it as selling his past to ignite his future.
A correction on that deal, since it is usually misreported: the widely quoted “$300 million” was not the price of the masters. It is $100 million cash for the masters plus the $200 million credit facility. Universal retains the other half of the catalogue.
Ashanti was not a party to it and received nothing documented. That gap — one counterparty realising $100 million from half a catalogue, the voice on the records estimated at $5 million — is the point. We will not attach a royalty rate to it, because no term of her Murder Inc. contract has ever been disclosed: no advance, no royalty percentage, no recoupment terms. The gap speaks without arithmetic.
The Re-Recording That Never Arrived
On 29 September 2021 she announced she would re-record her debut album, saying she had an amazing legal team. In December she was blunter about why: with the album turning twenty, it made sense to go back in and re-record so that she could collect her coins.
Two things are commonly said about this, and both are wrong.
She did not do it before Taylor Swift. Swift’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version) was released in April 2021 and went to number one on the Billboard 200. Ashanti’s announcement came roughly six months later. What is notable is that she was among the first Black women artists to attempt the strategy on a 2000s R&B catalogue — not that she originated it.
And the album has never been released. She told Good Morning America in July 2022 it would be out before the end of that year. As of July 2026 it appears in no discography database — we checked MusicBrainz directly, which lists no Ashanti release of any kind after 2014. The 2023 digital deluxe edition of the original album is a reissue with remixes, not a re-recording, and the two get conflated.
There is also an unresolved dispute underneath it. She implied in 2021 that she had reclaimed her masters; asked directly whether Gotti owned them, she said no, then immediately retreated — let Universal answer that. Gotti responded publicly that he owned the masters and a good portion of the publishing. The following year he sold a 50% stake in them, which he could only do if he held it. He died in February 2025, and the question was never settled publicly.
Where the Money Comes From Now
Her last studio album was Braveheart in 2014 — twelve years ago — and neither it nor 2008’s The Declaration was ever RIAA-certified.
